“Psychosomatic Intelligence® is the capacity to recognise, interpret and regulate physiological mind–body patterns that influence performance, communication, and wellbeing. “

Intelligence Is More Than What Happens in the Mind
You Can Know Better and Still Respond the Same Way
A leader can understand a situation intellectually. They can recognise their emotions. They can know how they would ideally like to respond. And yet, when circumstances change, their physiological response may influence what happens next. This helps explain an important leadership paradox: knowledge and awareness do not always translate into behaviour. What we know cognitively and understand emotionally still has to be expressed through a physiological human system.
Psychosomatic Intelligence® brings intelligence to this additional layer.
The Physiology Between Intention and Behaviour
Mental and emotional states do not necessarily remain mental. They can have physiological expression, and recurring physiological responses may become part of the patterns through which a person experiences and responds to particular situations.
These patterns can influence how existing capabilities are expressed, including attention, communication, decision-making and behaviour. PI is therefore not simply greater self-awareness. It is the capacity to recognise, interpret and develop greater regulation around the mind–body patterns influencing how we operate. The specific patterns and developmental methodology remain part of the Institute’s proprietary framework.

Our Understanding of Intelligence Has Evolved
The capabilities organisations expect from leaders have expanded considerably.
IQ gave us a language for cognitive capability. The ability to reason, analyse, learn, solve problems and navigate complexity remains fundamental to leadership. But organisations discovered that cognitive ability alone was insufficient.
EQ expanded the picture to emotional and relational capability. Emotional awareness, empathy, communication and the ability to navigate relationships became recognised as important dimensions of effective leadership.
Psychosomatic Intelligence® introduces another dimension. It brings the physiological expression of our mental and emotional experience into the understanding of leadership intelligence.
What Does Psychosomatic Intelligence® Add?
Understanding what we think and recognising what we feel is not necessarily the same as recognising what those states are doing physiologically or how recurring physiological patterns may influence what happens next. That is the territory of Psychosomatic Intelligence®. It does not seek to replace IQ or EQ. Each addresses a different dimension of human capability:
IQ — Cognitive capability
How we reason, analyse, learn and solve problems.
EQ — Emotional and relational capability
How we recognise emotions and navigate relationships.
PIQ® — Mind–body capability
How we recognise, interpret and regulate physiological patterns influencing the expression of our capabilities. It does not replace IQ or EQ. It adds the physiological dimension.
The Question Psychosomatic Intelligence® Introduces
A highly intelligent leader may know what needs to happen. An emotionally intelligent leader may understand what they and others are feeling. Psychosomatic Intelligence® introduces another question: What happens when what you know, feel and intend meets the physiology of the person who has to act on it? This is why PI extends rather than competes with existing concepts of leadership intelligence.
The Human System Behind Performance
Modern work can accelerate almost everything around the leader. Information arrives faster. Decisions are expected sooner. Technology increases cognitive throughput. Organisational change can happen continuously. But human performance remains embodied. Our ability to think, communicate, decide and behave still operates through a biological human system.
Psychosomatic Intelligence® brings attention to the capacity of that system and to the recurring physiological patterns that may influence how leadership capability is expressed as demands change.
Performance and Wellbeing Are Not Separate Systems
Organisations have traditionally treated performance and wellbeing as different agendas. One asks: How do we help people perform better? The other asks: How do we protect their wellbeing while they do it? Psychosomatic Intelligence® introduces a different perspective. The same human system is responsible for both. The patterns through which a person produces performance may also be relevant to how that performance is experienced and sustained over time.
This makes Psychosomatic Intelligence® relevant not only to leadership effectiveness, but to the relationship between performance, human capacity and workplace wellbeing.
Can Psychosomatic Intelligence® Be Developed?
Psychosomatic Intelligence® is positioned as a developable capacity, rather than a fixed personality characteristic. The objective is not to eliminate physiological responses or maintain some ideal state. Human beings respond to challenge, uncertainty and change for legitimate biological reasons.
The developmental question is whether an individual can become more capable of recognising what is happening, interpreting its relevance and regulating recurring patterns when they no longer support the situation. This is the capability developed within Psychosomatic Leadership®.
If We Can Develop It, Can We Measure It?
Development becomes more meaningful when there is a structured way to understand where someone is starting. That is the purpose of PIQ® — the Psychosomatic Intelligence Quotient. PIQ® is the proprietary assessment system developed by the Psychosomatic Leadership Institute® to measure Psychosomatic Intelligence® and provide structured insight into patterns relevant to leadership and human performance. It creates a measurable starting point for reflection and development without reducing an individual to a personality label.
What PIQ® Is — and Is Not
PIQ® is designed specifically around Psychosomatic Intelligence®. It is not a personality test, an employee wellbeing survey or a clinical diagnostic assessment. The assessment methodology, constructs, pattern framework and scoring remain proprietary to the Institute and are applied through defined professional standards.
